I grew up in a small town — Quang Ngai — in the Central of Vietnam. There was nothing special about family or myself except for ‘dramas’ and a lot of other opinions on the way I was raised and the way I experienced life.
Therefore, I chose to grow up headstrong and I wanted to prove myself to everyone. It immediately hit me when someone commented that “I am not good”. I reacted strongly when someone criticized my family background or my education. I always tried…

Sometimes I’m contacted by people on LinkedIn who are just starting or are in the early stages of their careers asking how to get into Private Equity, or how to prepare themselves to get hired by Mekong Capital and be successful at Mekong Capital. In this blog post, I will address this from the perspective of Mekong Capital.
Most outsiders’ idea of what it is that we do is quite different from what we actually do. Most outsiders imagine our jobs involve meeting lots of pipeline companies, writing investment memos, financial…

While the pandemic stops most of our journeys to the outside world, it also created a possibility for us to embark on one of the most remarkable journeys of all — a journey to our inner self. These journeys won’t capture the usual frivolous landscapes or exotic itineraries. Instead, these are the trips into our mind, to seek from our beautiful memories a mission of who we are and what we stand for.
Let me share mine with you.
I had always felt compelled to step in and provide leadership from…

In 2019, I joined one of Mekong Capital’s internal coaching sessions to have breakthroughs in my being core values.
In one of the very last sessions, the coaches asked us to note down, “How you occur for yourself?”.
“Ha! This is easy”, I thought. I immediately wrote three statements:
“I am confident. I am strong. I am reliable”.
But the coaches wouldn’t let me stop there.
The coaches insisted that each of us needed to dig as deep as possible to see the ‘labels’ we had on ourselves:

This has been the first reaction to anyone who had heard my answer for whether I am “happy” or “fulfilled” at Mekong Capital.
I came across the concept of Ikigai a couple of years ago, when I was going through a deep discovery phase. Operating in a state of Ikigai (or a “reason for being”) is the moment these four driving forces are in balance: Profession, Vocation, Passion, and Mission.

I fully chose to join Mekong Capital. In fact, even before my first day, it was clear that my commitment was long-term. But four weeks later, I discovered that no matter what I knew or thought I knew before my first day, being successful at Mekong Capital was going to require something beyond what I learned from my past, not just for me, but for all newcomers.
When I joined in March 2020, there were 5 of us, the “newcomers,” amid our first ‘3-month-probation’. Then Minh Giang asked me…

“Thuy, I would like to invite you to be the Deal Support for YOLA.” Sjoerd, the Deal Leader, suddenly offered me this opportunity.
After a few seconds of thought, I replied reluctantly: “Yes.”
Sensing my hesitancy, Sjoerd smiled gently and said: “Thuy, it doesn’t sound like an exciting “Yes”. You know that you can always say no, right?”
It has been 5 months since I joined the Investment team. I have not been in any deals yet. This was a perfect chance, so I asserted:
